Using energy-saving LED lights, installing inverters, and utilizing low-calorific-value coal to supply heat for boilers has helped Nui Beo Coal Joint Stock Corporation (Nui Beo Coal) save over 1 million kWh annually.

Compliance with Legal Regulations
The production operation center of Nui Beo Coal JSC – Vinacomin is one of the key energy-consuming facilities in Quang Ninh Province. On average, Nui Beo Coal consumes over 50 million kWh of electricity annually and has been a pioneer in implementing various electricity-saving and energy efficiency solutions for many years.

Speaking with reporters, Mr. Nguyen Xuan Phung – Deputy Director of Nui Beo Coal JSC – Vinacomin, noted that the coal industry is highly specialized, making it difficult to apply technology in production, and even more challenging to apply energy-saving technologies.
“However, despite the difficulties, we — the miners, with our slogan ‘Discipline and Unity’ — do not back down. In recent years, Nui Beo Coal has implemented many solutions, from internal management practices to high-cost investment solutions, to comply with legal regulations and the Prime Minister’s Directive on energy saving,” Mr. Phung shared.
Specifically, more than 80% of lighting equipment has been replaced with energy-saving LED lights; warehouses and work areas have been designed to maximize the use of natural light and ventilation.
The company also reduced unnecessary lighting; lighting systems in hallways, gardens, and security areas operate seasonally and are equipped with timers for automatic switching.
Promoting Technological Investment Solutions
In production areas, to save electricity, Nui Beo Coal installed control devices such as inverters and soft starters on equipment with a capacity over 20kW, including air compressors, conveyors, crushers, underground mine ventilation fans, and water pumps. Unused equipment is disconnected using main circuit breakers; pumps are operated during off-peak hours (from 12:00 a.m. to 5:00 a.m.).
In addition, the electrical grid system is regularly maintained and serviced to avoid voltage losses along transmission lines and minimize idle or underloaded equipment operation time.
The company has also invested in modern, safe, and energy-saving machinery and equipment, incorporating energy-efficient technologies such as motors, pumps, and ventilation devices into its production lines.

Alongside applying modern, automated production technology, in recent years, Nui Beo Coal has also explored the use of alternative energy sources in auxiliary processes to save electricity in its production line.
Mr. Nguyen Van Phung noted that since 2017, the company has used its local product — coal dust types 5 and 6 (low-calorific-value coal) — to fire chain-grate boilers equipped with energy-saving mechanisms. The steam generated is distributed through insulated, heat-retaining steel pipes to supply heat to systems used for: bathing, laundry, drying, rice cooking, and temperature control.
For air conditioning, saturated steam is delivered to the gas chamber of the central air-conditioning system, condensed into liquid, and circulated through the cooling chambers, supplying the localized cooling units in office rooms.
As a result of these comprehensive solutions, in 2024, Nui Beo Coal consumed 53,516,688 kWh out of a planned quota of 54,608,665 kWh, saving 1,092,177 kWh and helping the company save billions of VND. In 2025, the company aims to reduce total electricity consumption by at least 2–3%.
