Promoting Electricity Saving
Thai Nguyen is one of the largest electricity-consuming provinces in Northern Vietnam. Electricity consumption for industrial zones, steel production, and metallurgy accounts for approximately 75% of the province's total electricity usage.
To meet the production demands of one of the major industrial centers, in addition to the Northern Power Corporation's investment in dozens of substations and grid upgrades to enhance power capacity, Thai Nguyen Power Company (PC) has intensified efforts to provide safe, stable electricity while encouraging businesses and residents to save and use electricity efficiently.

Mr. Tran Van Tuan, Deputy Director of Thai Nguyen Power Company, said that the power sector has been actively promoting electricity saving through mass media, social networks, leaflets, and customer notifications about rising electricity bills to develop electricity-saving habits. The sector encourages the principle of using electricity “at the right time, in the right place, in the right way, and for the right needs” to foster a culture of electricity saving in society.
"To meet the increasing electricity demand without interruptions, we encourage major electricity consumers, particularly in the metallurgy industry, to shift production to off-peak hours. Additionally, PC Thai Nguyen supports and encourages enterprises to invest in technical innovations to save electricity."
Upgrading High-Efficiency Equipment
Toan Thang Steel Joint Stock Company (located in Song Cong I Industrial Zone, Song Cong City, Thai Nguyen province) specializes in producing high-manganese slag and alloy steel billets with an annual capacity of 295,000 tons. During production, Toan Thang Steel consumes large amounts of electricity, coke, and gas. Therefore, applying energy-saving measures across various production stages has always been a top priority for the company.

Sharing an effective energy-saving solution, Mr. Ngo Sy Nha, Deputy Director in charge of technology at Toan Thang Steel, said the company invested in a steel billet production line that starts from iron ore. After pelletizing and sintering, the material goes through a blast furnace to produce molten iron, which is then processed in the steel mill. Previously, this process relied on electrical energy, but now the company utilizes the chemical heat of molten iron to refine steel, reducing electricity consumption.
Additionally, switching from electric furnace technology to oxygen-blown furnace technology has reduced energy consumption from 600 kWh/ton of product to just 20 kWh/ton of product, a reduction of over 90%.
Mr. Nha added that the steel mill's dust extraction fans consume the most electricity. Therefore, the company's goal is to install variable frequency drives (VFDs) to regulate fan speeds and reduce energy consumption.
Moreover, the heat generated during the steel refining process is currently not being utilized. In the future, the company plans to use this heat to generate steam for electricity production, further reducing electricity demand.

Similarly, the Song Cong Zinc Electrolysis Plant has invested over 10 billion VND to upgrade its acid production unit's transformation tower, minimizing the use of electricity for heating.
Mr. Bui Huy Tuan, Deputy Director of Song Cong Zinc Electrolysis Plant, said the plant consumes 4.5 to 5 million kWh of electricity per month, with electricity costs accounting for about one-fourth of the price of zinc ingots. Therefore, improving technical processes and investing in modern equipment are vital not only for reducing electricity consumption but also for cutting costs, lowering product prices, and enhancing competitiveness in the market. Furthermore, plant leadership and workshop supervisors regularly remind workers to use electricity rationally, efficiently, and economically in all activities.

Across Thai Nguyen province, businesses have become increasingly aware of the importance of saving electricity and energy. The benefits of electricity savings extend beyond the economy, environment, and society to provide profits and enhance competitiveness for the businesses themselves.
