Industrial Enterprises Improve Energy Efficiency through ISO 50001:2018

VSUEE Project organized the training program “Raising Awareness among Industrial Enterprises on ISO 50001:2018” in Hanoi on August 11–12, 2026.
ISO 50001:2018 is an international standard that specifies requirements for establishing, implementing, maintaining, and continually improving an Energy Management System. A key feature of the standard is that it enables enterprises to treat energy as a resource that needs to be managed systematically, similar to other critical resources in production operations.
Rather than focusing solely on replacing a piece of equipment or implementing an individual energy-saving project, enterprises applying ISO 50001 can establish a continuous management cycle through steps such as collecting and analyzing data, identifying significant energy uses, setting objectives, implementing solutions, measuring results, evaluating performance, and continually improving. This approach is particularly relevant to large-scale industrial enterprises with complex production processes and diverse energy-consuming systems. When energy data is regularly monitored and linked to specific performance indicators, enterprises can more accurately identify where energy is being consumed, the causes of high consumption, and areas with potential for improvement.
Through the training program, enterprises were guided on identifying Significant Energy Uses (SEUs), developing Energy Performance Indicators (EnPIs), and establishing energy baselines.
Enterprises can move from assessing energy performance based on perception and experience to making assessments based on data. This also provides an important foundation for identifying energy-saving opportunities, prioritizing high-impact projects, and tracking improvements after investments are made. With this approach, ISO 50001 not only supports energy efficiency but also contributes to better investment decision-making. Enterprises can more clearly determine which solutions should be prioritized, which areas of energy consumption need improvement, and what results each measure delivers after implementation.
For industrial enterprises, energy is a key input that directly affects production costs. Therefore, improving energy efficiency creates additional opportunities for enterprises to reduce costs and strengthen their competitiveness. Applying ISO 50001:2018 enables enterprises to control energy consumption better, identify inefficiencies in operations, and sustain the effectiveness of energy-saving measures after investment. More importantly, the system establishes clear responsibilities across departments, making energy management an integral part of corporate management rather than solely the responsibility of technical staff.
The training program combines both online and offline formats to provide the best possible conditions for participating enterprises.
The Hanoi training program also helped enterprises better understand the relationship between ISO 50001:2018 and Vietnam’s requirements for energy efficiency and conservation. Activities such as energy audits, monitoring and reporting energy use, appointing energy managers, and developing energy efficiency plans can all be integrated into a coherent and consistent energy management system.
In particular, as requirements related to ESG, emissions reduction, and Net Zero 2050 increasingly become part of production activities and global supply chains, enterprises’ capacity to manage and transparently report energy data will become increasingly important. ISO 50001:2018 is therefore not merely a technical tool; it can also serve as a management tool that helps enterprises respond to emerging market requirements.

The VSUEE training program was designed with a strong focus on practical application. In addition to learning about the requirements of ISO 50001:2018, participants worked with practical cases and exercises related to energy assessment, identification of SEUs, development of EnPIs and energy baselines, as well as monitoring and measurement activities. This approach enabled enterprises to gain a clearer understanding of how an Energy Management System can be established and operated under actual business conditions, from preparing data and developing procedures to monitoring and improving performance.
Through the Hanoi training program, the VSUEE Project continues to promote the adoption of ISO 50001:2018 among industrial enterprises to build long-term energy management capacity rather than focus solely on immediate energy-saving measures. When effectively implemented, ISO 50001:2018 can help enterprises manage energy more effectively, use resources more efficiently, reduce costs and emissions, and strengthen competitiveness, while providing a foundation for the green transition and sustainable development of Vietnam’s industrial sector.
