Formosa Ha Tinh Hung Nghiep Steel Co., Ltd., (FHS) is part of the Formosa Group, Taiwan. The company is the main investor in the Son Duong Steel Complex and Deep-Water Port project, with a total investment of over USD 12.8 billion. The main products of FHS include hot rolled steel, rebar, and wire rods, which are used domestically and exported to Europe and Southeast Asia. This industry is energy-intensive.

In its business strategy, FHS always prioritizes energy-saving and efficient use. Mr. Ly Tan Hoa, Deputy General Director of FHS, stated: "Formosa Ha Tinh is a key energy user. Optimizing costs and enhancing production capacity are top priorities for the company. We recognize that saving electricity helps reduce costs, contributing to the balanced development of electricity supply and demand, environmental protection, and ensuring economic efficiency and national energy security."

During the steelmaking process, the converter furnace produces converter gas (LDG). The company has built a recovery system to send this gas to the power plant as fuel, saving energy and reducing CO2 emissions. This solution saves approximately 286.325 million kWh of electricity annually.

In the blast furnace ironmaking process, blast furnace gas (BFG) is produced, and the pressure at the top of the blast furnace is utilized to generate electricity. This saves about 72 million kWh annually.

In the boiler area of the dry quenching system in the coke plant, the company uses waste heat from hot coke to produce steam for electricity generation, saving about 207.360 million kWh annually.

In March 2020, recognizing that the oxygen content in the hot rolling furnace was 8-10%, causing fuel wastage, the company implemented a solution to control the oxygen content at about 4%. This saves approximately 11.227.649 kWh annually.

In June 2022, the air compressor pipe in the steel rolling department was moved outdoors, reducing the intake air temperature, decreasing the compressor's power consumption, and saving about 413.329 kWh annually.

Additionally, the company replaced the large fans with smaller ones for the cooling tower circulation pump in the air separation line, saving about 849,000 kWh annually. Replacing the hydraulic couplings in the boiler feed pumps of two gas-fired power plant units with rigid couplings increased power generation capacity and saved about 66.7 million kWh annually. Optimizing the operation of the air compressor in the coking plant saved about 108,000 kWh annually. Increasing the size of the steam exhaust pipe in the main steam system at the turbine of three coal-fired power plant units reduced the time to reach full-load power generation after startup, saving about 900,000 kWh annually.

For lighting, the company utilizes natural light and replaces fluorescent lighting with high-efficiency LED lights, saving energy.

Besides large investment solutions, FHS has developed and implemented an energy management system, which includes establishing energy-saving policies, forming an energy management team, and creating internal energy-saving management processes integrated with production activities. The company regularly conducts training to raise awareness and expertise in energy-saving and efficient use among staff and workers, sending specialized departments to participate in energy manager and energy auditor training courses.
