Thanks to technological innovation and the implementation of energy-saving solutions, VINAMILK has reduced its electricity consumption per ton of product from 139.28 kWh in 2021 to 137.30 kWh in 2023.
With a massive network of 14 factories and 16 domestic and international farms, Vinamilk demonstrates leadership in energy-saving activities aimed at sustainable development.
Aware that any production activity impacts the environment and community, Vinamilk continuously seeks solutions to minimize these impacts and efficiently utilize resources and energy.
Vinamilk farms use solar energy.
Nguyen Quoc Phong, Head of Energy, Environment, and Circular Economy at Vinamilk, stated that due to its production characteristics, Vinamilk consumes a significant amount of electricity. However, by proactively implementing energy-saving solutions and investing in energy efficiency, Vinamilk is seen as a model for using energy economically and effectively.
"Currently, Vinamilk uses 86% green and clean energy from biomass and CNG instead of fossil fuels. Additionally, 11 factories and 13 farms have installed solar energy systems with a total capacity of 42 MWp, meeting 15-20% of electricity needs," Phong reported.
Notably, the company has invested in a biogas system that converts livestock waste into fertilizer for crops and pastures, while capturing methane gas for use as fuel, thereby reducing electricity consumption in some farm operations.
Improving the lighting system helps Vinamilk save 72% on lighting electricity annually.
The company focuses on applying and implementing energy-saving technologies, such as recovering and reusing 92% of excess heat, using robots for goods handling instead of traditional forklifts to reduce emissions by 62%, and implementing smart automated warehouse technology that reduces warehouse size to 1/6 of traditional warehouses and saves 70% on energy.
In terms of lighting, the company has replaced high-pressure lamps with LED lights in production areas, saving 72% on lighting electricity.
Vinamilk imports machinery and equipment from the EU/G7 that meet strict emission standards to save energy. Additionally, the company uses energy monitoring software to analyze and optimize consumption needs and reduce losses, and operational calculation software to increase equipment efficiency.
Vinamilk invests in many modern technologies to save energy and reduce emissions.
Alongside technological improvements, Vinamilk also focuses on management solutions and building strategies for efficient and sustainable energy use. Phong mentioned that the company’s energy management team is responsible for developing energy policies and systems. Since 2013, all Vinamilk factories have implemented the ISO 50001 energy management system. Consequently, all employees are trained in energy management awareness, and those involved in the energy management system must attend annual training to refresh and update their knowledge and effectively implement the system.
"Thanks to technological innovation and energy-saving solutions, Vinamilk has reduced its electricity consumption per ton of product from 139.28 kWh in 2021 to 137.30 kWh in 2023," Phong stated.
The ISO 50001 energy management system is a useful tool that helps Vinamilk optimize energy use.
It is clear that the application and implementation of energy-saving activities and initiatives, along with the adoption of new energy types in production at Vinamilk, have positively contributed to sustainable energy use, reduced electricity consumption, and decreased CO2 emissions in sustainable dairy farming and production.
